Young Indigenous leaders from across Asia convened at the Asia Young Indigenous Peoples Network (AYIPN) Regional Rights Camp from December 12 to 14, 2024, reaffirming their commitment to protecting Indigenous lands, culture, and rights. The gathering was part of the “Indigenous Lands in Indigenous Hands” (ILIH) campaign, aimed at ensuring Indigenous communities retain control over their ancestral territories.
Eleven Indigenous youth leaders from diverse communities participated in this strategic meeting. They exchanged experiences, strengthened their networks, and outlined key priorities such as skill development, environmental protection, and advocacy for land rights.
A significant highlight was a dialogue with Indigenous leaders from the Cordillera region, where discussions centered on political challenges, cultural preservation, and the need for greater solidarity among Indigenous movements.
Participants tackled key barriers such as language differences, cross-border collaboration, and resource mobilization. To overcome these hurdles, they emphasized the use of translation tools, social media platforms, and mentorship from previous AYIPN leaders. Additionally, they committed to enhancing fundraising efforts through new partnerships and community-driven initiatives.
The leadership camp underscored the need for better coordination, broader partnerships, and regular engagement through quarterly virtual meetings. Leaders also highlighted the importance of research and documentation to engage more Indigenous youth in advocacy efforts and policy discussions.
“We must claim our space in global movements to strengthen international solidarity, especially given the rising human rights violations in our communities,” said Sabba Raui, AYIPN’s South Asia Subregional Representative.
AYIPN plans to expand its collaborations, hold regular leadership meetings, and develop localized advocacy materials. The camp reinforced the urgent need for Indigenous youth to take leadership roles in defending their lands, culture, and rights. ###
