Defending Indigenous Lands is Defending the Environment!
On this World Environment Day, the Asia Young Indigenous Peoples Network (AYIPN) stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities across Asia who continue to defend their ancestral lands, territories, and resources against the growing encroachment of development agression projects.
Across the region, Indigenous Peoples face increasing threats from large-scale mining, dams, plantations, infrastructure projects, energy developments, and other extractive industries that are imposed without our free, prior, and informed consent. These projects are often promoted in the name of progress and economic growth, yet they result in land dispossession, environmental destruction, forced displacement, and violations of human and Indigenous Peoples’ rights.
This World Environment Day, AYIPN strengthen its commitment to our ILIH Campaign—Indigenous Lands in Indigenous Hands and we believed that environmental protection cannot be achieved without securing Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination. We call on Indigenous youth across Asia to continue to resist development aggression and strengthen collective actions to protect our ancestral lands and the environment for future generations.
