The Asia Young Indigenous Peoples Network (AYIPN) extends solidarity to the people of Manipur on today’s observance of Patriots’ Day.
This day commemorates the execution of Yubaraj Tikendrajit and Thangal General on 13th of August, 1891 at Pheidabung by the British colonial authorities for their resistance and revolt against the British Empire. Manipur was once an independent kingdom with a proud history of defending its sovereignty, dignity, and identity. Patriots’ Day is observed to pay tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives rather than surrender to colonial rule. In Manipur, this day is observed as an official public holiday to honour their courage and sacrifice.
Their bravery in defending the dignity, freedom, and rights of the people of Manipur remains an important part in the history of Manipur. Their legacy continues to inspire Indigenous peoples, especially the younger generation.
As Indigenous youth, we must remember and respect their sacrifices by carrying forward their values of courage, unity, and resilience. Their legacy reminds us to strengthen our right to self-determination, protect and promote our Indigenous identity, culture, traditions, and history, and stand together against all forms of discrimination, oppression, and subjugation.
On this Patriots’ Day, we also call upon Indigenous youth to remain united in our collective struggle. Our strength lies in our collective efforts, our love for our people, and our trust in one another. We must not allow external forces or divisive influences to weaken our unity or break the collective spirit that our forefathers built through their sacrifices. By standing together with mutual respect, solidarity, and determination, we can continue to protect our rights, safeguard our identity and culture, and build a just, peaceful, and dignified future for Indigenous peoples.
