Today marks the 64th year since the signing of the New York Agreement on 15 August 1962—a deal between the Netherlands and Indonesia, brokered by the United States and the United Nations, that shaped the future of West Papua without the participation and consent of its Indigenous Peoples.
For the Indigenous Peoples of West Papua, the years that followed brought decades of militarization, political repression, displacement, and human rights violations. Despite this long history, communities continue to defend their lands, rights, and way of life, while asserting the rights of West Papua.
The Indigenous Youth across Asia stand in solidarity with the people of West Papua in their call for justice, dignity, peace, and self-determination.
