A Discourse on Global Climate Policy and Local Initiatives

A Discourse on Global Climate Policy and Local Initiatives

A one-day discourse regarding “Global Climate Policy and Local Initiatives” gathered youth in Imphal East last October 2, 2026. This was organized by the Youth’s Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) to create a space in sharing experiences and concerns faced by Indigenous peoples in Manipur regarding climate crisis.

Some of the highlights brought in the discussion were the significance of Indigenous knowledge, traditional practices, and community-led solutions in addressing climate crisis. The discussion also called for an accessible and reliable public transportation to lessen the reliance of the people on private vehicles and to address traffic challenges.

Most importantly, the youth emphasized the need of the institutions to ensure Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) to the Indigenous communities, before they implement climate actions and other interventions. Lastly, participants agreed that the government need to communicate and engage with the people to advocate for policies that is rights-based and environmentally sustainable.

Overall, the event shows that once the young people speak to the realities faced by their communities, climate action no longer becomes just a policy. It becomes a movement strong enough to reshape our future from the ground up.
