Reflection from 2nd AIYP General Assembly and the 3rd Asia Indigenous Peoples Youth Conference in Chiang Mai

As part of our reflections from the 2nd AIYP General Assembly and the 3rd Asia Indigenous Peoples Youth Conference in Chiang Mai, we now hear the insights of our fellow Indigenous youth from Taiwan.

In Taiwan, Indigenous Peoples continue to face challenges in securing full recognition of their ancestral territories. The Indigenous youth in Taiwan are at the forefront of movements for land justice, cultural revitalization, and political recognition, asserting their voices in both national and regional spaces.

Let us hear from Kaisanan Ahuan (@kaisanan_ahuan) from Papora Indigenous Development Association the importance of Indigenous Youth voices being amplified in regional and global spaces.

“Through cross-regional dialogues, I learned the importance of building stronger connections among Indigenous youth. Listening to peers across Asia shows that, while our struggles may different, our hopes and visions are deeply connected.

These dialogues also made me reflect on the meaning of human rights and indigeneity. These are not fixed ideas—they continue to evolve and are understood differently depending on our contexts.

As Indigenous youth, we carry both opportunities and responsibilities. We must not lose our ties to our communities and mother cultures. These roots shape our identity, give us strength, and guide us toward the future. By holding to our roots while building bridges across regions, we can move together toward a future where Indigenous voices are stronger and truly respected.”
