Let us hear from Catherine Dalon, a Lumad youth from Siklab Philippine Indigenous Youth Network, as she shares her reflections from the 2nd AIYP General Assembly and the 3rd Asia Indigenous Peoples Youth Conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
“Kung para sa mga kapalista, barya ang halaga ng lupa, para sa aming mga katutubo ito ay buhay. At buhay ng susunod na salinlahing magmamana at makikibaka para sa lupang ninuno. At ito ang nag-uugnay sa bawat kabataang katutubo sa buong asya at mundo. Ang danas sa pang-aagaw sa lupa, militarisasyon, kawalan ng tunay na representasyon at iba pang porma ng pang-aatake ng estado. Lahat kami ay pinagbibigkis ng aming mithiing makamit ang aming karapatan sa sariling pagpapasya.
Sa country reports, nakita ko ang kahalagahan ng pagtitipon ng mga kabataang katutubo upang makita ang kalagayan ng bawat rehiyon at pagkakaiba, para rin makapag-ambag ng maaaring solusyon sa mga suliraning kinakaharap. Pagpapraktika ito ng kolektibo kultura, pagkakaisa sa pagharap sa mga hamon.”
“For the capitalists, land is worth only of coins, but for us Indigenous Peoples, it is life. It is the life of the next generations who will inherit it and continue the struggle for our ancestral lands. This is what connects every Indigenous youth across Asia and the world — the shared experience of land grabbing, militarization, lack of genuine representation, and other forms of state attacks. We are all bound together by our aspiration to achieve our right to self-determination.
In the country reports, I saw the importance of gathering Indigenous youth to understand the situation of each region and their differences, and also to contribute possible solutions to the challenges being faced. This is a practice of collective culture, of unity in confronting these struggles.”
